Caffeine – The Energy Standard
In modern society, caffeine has become synonymous with boosting energy. Coffee, tea, soda, energy drinks, etc. all proclaim to provide you with the “lift” you need because of the magic power of this chemical compound. But what is it?
Caffeine is in a class of chemical compounds known as xanthines – mild stimulants that also include some asthma-treating medications. Caffeine is found naturally in many different plants, and evidence suggests that humans have been exploiting the effects of caffeine for thousands of years due to the perception that certain of these plants helped people to stay awake, stay focused, or even stay happier.
The molecular formula for caffeine is C8H10N4O2. Caffeine enters the brain through the bloodstream and attaches itself to adenosine receptors. Adenosine, a naturally occurring substance in the body, acts to protect the brain by suppressing neural activities when one is tired or under an extreme amount of stress. Caffeine, then, blocks adenosine from binding to the brain and therefore reduces the impact of said neural suppression and keeps your awake and alert.
It all sounds fine and dandy if you need that extra boost to help get you through the day, but long-term caffeine misuse can lead to a number of different health issues. Consistent use of caffeine can lead the brain to compensate by producing more adenosine receptors. Thus, the levels of caffeine needed to maintain the same levels of energy will increase over time. Just like with hard drugs and alcohol, dependency can increase – and the more you take, the more withdrawal you will suffer when trying to break that dependency.
Acute misuse of caffeine can also lead to issues. Ingesting more than 300mg of caffeine at one time can potentially lead to a feeling of nervousness, lack of concentration, irregular heart function, and stomach aches! To put this in perspective, some energy drinks on the market today contain more than 300mg of caffeine per serving.
Ultimately, caffeine will stand tall as the gold standard for boosting energy. It’s survived the test of time, and it sure comes in some tasty forms. Just make sure to use in moderation and look elsewhere for more wholesale lifestyle changes and energy boosts.
